This session highlights a panel of people that understand the power of communities of practice in organizations where project and program managers are key to success. The recently signed Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act (PMIAA) requires the establishment of a high level community of practice called a Program Management Policy Council which will help guide the Federal Government's efforts to support practitioners. In addition, within the Federal Government there is currently a strong Project Management Community of Practice (FedPM CoP) made up of over 500 members from over 80 federal agencies. Government agencies rely heavily on project and program managers and their success is tied to the strategic success of the organization. These communities tap into the demand for a way to connect with colleagues, prevent duplicative work, and share successful approaches across federal agencies and departments. The discussion will discuss the development and growth of the FedPM CoP from a small group of IT project managers to the large organization it is today with six major topic areas of focus. The FedPM CoP and other agency CoPs demonstrate the value of establishing a forum for bringing program and project managers together. This session will motivate and inspire attendees to translate this kind of outreach into their own organizations.
